The Books of Heaven

God Writing

Do you ever think about the books of heaven? Malachi speaks of a book of remembrance written in the presence of God, a record of the words spoken by those who feared the Lord. And in the Psalms, David cries out to God “put my tears in your bottle” and then declares “are they not in your book?” I wonder, is this book the same one from Malachi or yet a different book kept by God? Either way, God keeps books full of our stories…the costly victories won in the secret place, the sorrows and pains endured in silence, the joys celebrated in God’s presence, all are witnessed and forever recorded.

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name.
~ Malachi 3:16 (ESV)

I tend to think more than just a few books exist in heaven. Certainly, several other books receive mention in the Bible. Psalm 69, Philippians 4:3, and many verses in Revelation speak of the book of life, which is explained in Revelation 20-21 (a topic well beyond the scope of this post). Daniel 10 speaks of the book of truth, Ezekiel receives a book from heaven to eat, Revelation mentions various books–the book only the Lamb can open, the book of life, the little book held by an angel, and so forth.

Not only are there books kept in the presence of God, but also those God himself writes, as referenced in Exodus 32. God is the ultimate Author and wellspring of all creativity, and His creative genius is on display throughout Scripture. I love that amid the narrative of the Bible, God interwove stories and allegories (I might delve into storytelling in Scripture more in a later post), which strongly suggests to me that many of the books are not just records of history and events, but also rich stories that will grip us for ages to come.

So yes, books exist in heaven…some sobering, some intriguing, some beyond understanding. And one day, we will see them.

    This is remarkable.I volunteer in the prison ministry and one inmate asked
    me about the books in heaven. I thought I had to really study this one at
    home. And I saw this on my computer.You made my day and save me some
    work. Thanks again. See ya in the next world.

    Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be. (psalm 139:16)

    So our works, which are faithfully recorded in these books will be used in a setting such as spoken of in 2Cor3;13-15.Rewards for our works that abide, and loss for those that don’t but we will not lose our salvation..How sad that some names which were in the book of life will be taken away..Revelation22;19.and Rev.3;5..He that made worlds,and telleth all the names of stars..psalm147;4…is this heavenly constellations or angels?, whatever its amazing. What a kingdom of order to the last detail. Thank God our forgiven sin will not be remembered. remembered no more.. I would be one who has failed him so much…But believe he who has begun a good work in me shall perform it unto the day of Christ,amen.philippians1;6…..I think the great question we must decide is.Which bible version do you believe is Gods word.I am unashamedly a Kjv or more accurately The authorized version. Textus receptus…. Gods word..Psalm12;6-7…the preserved one
