While I love writing fiction–and fantasy especially–I haven’t dabbled in short stories yet. Something in me struggles to think in terms of short. I start with the kernel of an idea that I think would perhaps fit a short story, and then as I mull it over, it grows, stretching and expanding until it’s really only suited for something novel length. That said, after I complete the novel edit currently consuming all my fiction writing time, I’d like to attempt some shorter pieces, perhaps exploring characters and situations in my story world that didn’t make it into the book. At the very least, it will be fun to experiment.
However, for those who enjoy writing short stories, I’d like to mention a project I recently became aware of–Avenir Eclectia, “…a multi-author microfiction project, based in a world with flavors of science fiction, fantasy and supernatural genres.” As this project is associated with Splashdown Books, a relatively new independent publisher of Christian speculative fiction, the idea is that eventually the stories will be compiled into a collection for print. If you’re interested in participating, visit their join us section for more information.
If you don’t write but like reading short stories, you should stop by and see if any of the pieces catch your fancy. Since this project has just launched, only a handful of stories exist, but since I know some of the participants, my guess is that it will quickly pick up speed. I’m always happy to see experiments in the realm of Christian speculative fiction, and it will be interesting to watch this one develop.
Do you enjoy reading/writing short stories? Have you ever participated in a multi-author project (as a reader or writer)?
