“I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We’re in one, of course; but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read of in a great big book with red and black letter, years and years afterwards. And people will say: ‘Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring!'”
– JRR Tolkien, The Return of the King
Some of the heroes who sacrificed for our freedom have made it into the pages of books, read and remembered for years to come. But others who made the ultimate sacrifice received no glory in this world, nor was that their motive.
They laid down their lives that others might live in freedom, which Jesus said was the greatest sort of love.
So today, remember them. As you gather with friends and family, remember that you are able to do so because of those who went to war on our behalf, fought valiantly, and didn’t shrink back from giving even their lives.
