A Christian Fantasy Webinar

Christian Fantasy Writing

Firebird cover imageSince many of you write Christian fantasy as well as read it, I thought I’d share this webinar for Christian fantasy writers that may benefit some of you.

Kathy Tyers will present In the Footsteps of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, which will explore how modern-day Christian fantasy writers can follow the path blazed by Lewis and Tolkien.

Kathy has written space opera for years–including Star Wars novels and the Firebird trilogy–and for several different publishers, so she has experience to back up her words.

The webinar will take place April 26th from 8-9PM ET, and it will also be available as a download. I’ve included the official description and webinar link below.

“Do you write science Fiction or fantasy? The publishing industry has changed dramatically since Lewis and Tolkien. Can a contemporary Christian author still write in that rich tradition? Kathy Tyers, author of speculative fiction, will show you how to develop your science fiction and fantasy so it appeals to today’s readers.”

Find out more at the Christian Writers Guild.

This is the first time I can remember seeing a webinar dedicated to Christian speculative fiction. Do you think it’s a sign that the genre is growing? And is it something you would like to participate in?

Sarah, thank you for posting this! I don’t know if I’ll participate but will take a look. Well-chosen webinars can be worthwhile investments for writers who need to keep learning.

I enjoyed ~The Firebird Trilogy~ (Christian version), found it engrossing; although I had some trouble with the paranormal element, which is a major part of it. That aside, for world-building, action, intriguing characters, and romance the series is great.

    Have a good day!

You’re welcome. I think writers always need to keep learning. In fact, one of the things I like about writing is that there’s always some new facet of the craft to explore.

As a member of ACFW, I’ve participated in several of their webinars, and I’ve found them quite informative. I don’t belong to the Christian Writers Guild, but I’ve heard good things about them, and the fact that they offered a webinar for Christan fantasy certainly caught my attention!

Thanks for this Sarah! I’m interested in joining in for the learning. I’ve never read any of her stuff before, maybe I will after I’m done reading what I’m on now.

Richard, even if you can’t participate in this one, webinars are a fun way to learn about the craft of writing. I don’t know about this one, but many of them allow some time for Q&A, which is always nice. 🙂

I would call Kathy Tyers’ work space opera (much closer to science fiction than fantasy), so if you enjoy that subgenre, you may want to check it out.

I will definitely be there. I’m going to pass the word along to my writer’s guild too. Most of them are fantasy/spec/sci-fi writers and while not all can afford the fee, I’m going to let them know about the opportunity. Thanks so much for letting me know!

Michelle, it’s great that you’re passing the word along. I don’t know what this particular webinar will be like, but I imagine that the more interest shown in Christian speculative fiction webinars/classes, the more they will be offered. 🙂
