Even the seemingly small and insignificant may have souls of great courage. Don’t we cheer all the more for a character who determines to do the right thing and holds to that course, even when it seems unlikely to bring success? They become heroes because their hearts remain steadfast in the face of danger or difficulty.
We see it in literature, but we also see it in our life. The choices we must make aren’t as outwardly dramatic as those in stories. In fact, the “adventure” is often a maze of challenges from which we can’t see our way clear. And the decisions often take place in the secret place, hidden from most, but never from God.
He sees and rewards those decisions we make in secret–our choices to take joy in Him and trust Him regardless of circumstances.
Heroes in life choose to look to God and to persevere when confronted with difficulty. They pursue what they know is right and true with steadfast hearts, and these heroes–both in life and literature–provide inspiration for the situations we face.
This taking of courage in times of distress, of finding joy even in hardship and not shrinking back when faced with trial…it shapes us into strong individuals of godly character. Day by day, decision by decision, we can align ourselves with truth or decide to give up.
James says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-5, NIV) and “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” (James 1:12, NIV)
We know that God loves our response of faith amid difficulties and that alone gives courage to press on. If you’re facing challenges in your life (large or small), take heart and remember that there’s something beautiful to be won by persevering through trials.
